St Randoald
At Germanus' side (died AD 675)
According to Ökumenisches Heiligenlexikon (Ecumenical Lexicon of Saints, in German), Randoald was a monk at the monastery of Grandval. He was the companion of Abbot Germanus of Grandval with whom he was murdered by the local duke. At the time of the Reformation, the relics were “rescued” from Grandval, which had become Protestant, and moved to the Saint-Marcel parish church in Delsberg, which had stayed Catholic.
His memorial day, which is celebrated mainly in the Diocese of Basel, is on 21 February.
As St Randoald is one of the least known of the martyrs from Switzerland, he has been given his place of honour here.
