St Ursus and St Victor
The patron saints of Solothurn and the Diocese of Basel (died about 303)
According to the account written by the Bishop of Lyon, Eucherius, in AD 445, Ursus and Victor were (probably) part of the Theban Legion. They escaped the massacre at Saint-Maurice and fled (possibly with Verena) to Solothurn (Salodurum was a Roman settlement). There the martyr’s fate still befell them: first they were tortured and then beheaded. Christians buried them. A church was built over their graves, the site of the present-day St. Ursula Cathedral, the church of the Bishop of Basel. Both saints were already being venerated in Solothurn in the early 5th century.
Memorial day: 30 September.
