St Fridolin
Patron saint of the canton of Glarus (died AD 538)
Like most early missionaries, St Fridolin came from Ireland. His journey as a missionary led him from Poitiers in France via Strasburg and Constance to Chur. He then settled on an island in the Rhine near Bad Säckingen, where he established a monastery. St Fridolin became the patron saint of the canton of Glarus because of a donation of land – the present canton of Glarus, which has the saint in its cantonal coat of arms. According to legend, the legitimacy of the gift was contested so Fridolin had to bring a witness back from the dead to testify and assert his rights.
St Fridolin is regarded as the missionary to Alemanni; his memorial day is 3 March. <More>
