Diocese of Basel
In «exile» since the Reformation
The Diocese of Basel covers ten cantons: Aargau, Bern, Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Jura, Lucerne Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau and Zug. The saints of the Diocese of Basel are St Ursus and St Victor, who are revered in Solothurn, and St Verena with her sanctuary in Bad Zurzach. These three saints are associated with the Theban Legion and thus with St Maurice and the beginnings of Christianity on Swiss soil.
Until the Reformation the Basel Minster was the episcopal church. After Basel became Protestant, the seat of the bishop went into «exile» to Solothurn, but the name Diocese of Basel was kept.
