Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva, Fribourg

The diocese with the three cathedrals

As a consequence of the Reformation, the Bishop of Lausanne had to move his seat to Fribourg, which had remained Catholic. Today, the diocese is called the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva, Fribourg, and in addition to these three cantons it also covers the Neuchâtel canton. The local languages in this diocese are French and German (German-speaking Fribourg). The episcopal church is the St Nicholas Cathedral in Fribourg. The patron saint of the diocese and the town of Fribourg in Üechtland is St Nicholas.

Its three cathedrals are a feature of the Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva, Fribourg. Until the Reformation, the Cathedral of St. Peter in Geneva (now Protestant) was the episcopal church of the then Diocese of Geneva. Lausanne Cathedral (now also Protestant) had been the church of the Bishop of Lausanne since the early Middle Ages. And in Fribourg the status of the minster was upgraded to a cathedral when Fribourg became the seat of the Bishop of Lausanne.
