Diocese of Lugano
Roman and Ambrosian rites
Parts of the present-day Diocese of Lugano, which covers the whole of the canton of Tessin, belonged in earlier centuries to the Archdiocese of Milan, where St Ambrose introduced the rite named after him. The fact that about fifty parishes of the Diocese of Lugano still practise the Ambrosian Rite today is evidence of the link with Milan.
Together with St Charles Borromeo, St Ambrose is the patron saint of the Diocese of Lugano. The Diocese of Lugano was founded in 1888, at first under the administration of the Bishop of Basel. The Diocese of Lugano only became independent in 1971. Italian is the local language of the Diocese of Lugano.
