Visibly Catholic
How to recognise traditionally Catholic areas
Urban and rural areas that are traditionally Catholic are recognisable outwardly by their religious symbols. Wherever ramblers or travellers come across a little wayside shrine, a wayside cross, a crucifix, a monastery, a statue of a saint or a chapel, in all probability they are in a traditionally Roman Catholic region.
There are exceptions, though: not every mountain with a cross on the top is a «Catholic» mountain. Religious sayings on house walls are likewise not limited to Catholics and one can occasionally even see a Protestant chapel, like the one on the mountain pasture Selva above Poschiavo.
