The caves at Lake Thun are where St Beatus, the “apostle of Switzerland”, lived in about AD 112. St Beatus was the patron saint of Switzerland until well into the 20th century. The sanctuary was deconsecrated in the course of the Reformation. Nowadays, the site is primarily an amusement park, and to a large extent St Beatus has sunk into oblivion. The St Beatus Caves are located on the Swiss section of the Way of St James.
